BEAst: Knowledge through measurement

The construction and civil engineering sector is working together with seven other industry organisations towards a climate-neutral and competitive construction sector. Environmental-related data needs to be collected and processed to reduce resource use and climate impact.

The construction industry's electronic business standard, BEAst, enables the registration of environmental data in economic transactions between suppliers and clients. The system, which was developed for the construction industry and implemented since 2014 for economic monitoring, has now been supplemented with environmental data. In the long term, the BEAst project can collect environmental and emissions data for construction.

Purpose and goal

The purpose is to implement BEAst as a system for consistent reporting of economic and environmental data from construction transport.

The goal is for the system to be used in all procurements and provide efficient data collection.

Results and experiences

A pilot project to collect digital data on rock and excavated materials was launched in 2021. Digital delivery notes tracked material movements to and from the Mass Consolidation Centre and landfill sites. This ensured materials were delivered to the correct locations with verified weights, enabling continuous monitoring and prompt handling of any deviations. The digital management of delivery notes enhanced procurement transparency and improved the monitoring of environmental compliance. The system also allowed for the measurement of vehicle load capacity utilisation, leading to more efficient transport operations.

Based on these positive results, a support system was procured in 2022/2023. The system is planned to be implemented across the entire city in the long term.

• Collection of production and environmental data for fuels, which is then converted into carbon dioxide emissions.
• Evaluation of the system.
• A support system has been procured and implemented to handle BEAst standard messages.
• Environmental reporting requirements according to BEAst in all contracts.
